Quite the hike

Published 12/10/2015

Update: the crew has returned safely and the injured student is now in the care of Ambulance Victoria.

A school group has camped overnight at Federation Hut on Mount Feathertop after a 16-year-old student sprained his ankle while on an excursion, rendering him unable to walk out of the unforgiving terrain.

Three VICSES volunteers set off from Harrietville at first light and are expecting an eight-hour round-trip to reach the group. The volunteers are each specially trained in Alpine Rescue, equipping them to traverse the steep, mountainous conditions.

While they're hiking the eight kilometres to the hut, the trio will also be climbing to a height above sea level of more than 1,700 metres.

They will carry a stretcher up the mountain with which to safely carry the boy back to Harrietville and a waiting ambulance.
