Safe Work Australia Week
Safe Work Australia Week will be celebrated from 21-27 October and Victoria SES will be taking this opportunity to promote health and safety across the service.
Held annually, Safe Work Australia Week encourages all working Australians to focus on improving health and safety in their workplaces to reduce death, injury and disease. It reminds us all that safety should be a priority all year round. The theme of this year’s week, Safety begins with ‘S’ but starts with You, reminds Australian workers that anyone can lead safety in their workplace.
The costs to Australia due to workplace injuries and deaths each year are significant and are a timely reminder as to why safety is critical at all workplaces.
The cost to the Australian economy of work-related injury is $60.6 billion each year. This represents 4.8% of GDP.
- Over 1000 workers have been killed in workplace incidents in the past four years with one third due to vehicle incidents on public roads.
- 640,000 workers reported having a work-related injury or illness in the past year.
- 172,900 workers were injured badly enough to need five or more days off work.
Safe Work Australia Week will be celebrated at VICSES from 22-26 October and will include daily safety themes, daily safety challenges and daily safety phrases.
Themes for the week will include:
- Peer Support
- Bullying Prevention
- Manual Handling
- Forklift and Plant Safety
To coincide with Forklift and Plant Safety day, Friday the October 26 will be hi-vis day, with staff donning high-visibility clothing to draw attention to the issue of safety.
