School group's cold night

Published 12/10/2012

State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from the Maffra, Moe and Warragul units are assisitng in the rescue of a school group from the Alpine Forest 40 kilometres north of Licola.

Volunteers have been working alongside Victoria Police Search and Rescue, Ambulance Victoria and Bush Search and Rescue since about 3pm yesterday, when emergency services were first notified.

Eleven students and three teachers were believed to be hiking through the region when two students began showing signs of mild hypothermia.

Poor weather conditions, thick snow and the isolated nature of the region made for slow going, with SES volunteers utilising six-wheel snow vehicles to reach the group at about midnight last night.

The evacuation of the area is currently underway, with students being taken out in small groups.
