A stormy start to the weekend

Victoria State Emergency Service volunteers have has over 1000 calls since 06:30 this morning due to rain and wind lashing the state.

Melbourne metropolitan area has sustained a significant amount of damage with wind gusts of up to 96km/h recorded in parts of the city this morning.

Hardest hit areas were Melbourne suburbs Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Frankston and Bentley East as well as further east Churchill (near Morwell) and Drouin (near Warragul).

In Aspendale, the roof of a house that was under construction was blown into a neighbouring property.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding are still forecasted for part of the state. Flash flooding can be extremely dangerous. Never drive, walk or enter floodwater under any circumstances.

SES would also like to warn all Victorians driving home tonight to take extra precautions on the roads. Wet roads, low light and fallen trees can be a fatal combination. Drive to the conditions and arrive alive.
