Emergency services deploy to SA

Emergency services deploy to SA

Severe weather has inflicted damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding and, most notably, statewide power blackouts in South Australia.

Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said the state has answered SA’s call for assistance, with a taskforce including personnel and resources from VICSES and CFA  deployed today to work over the weekend.

“Here in Victoria we’ve been dealing with significant flooding and heavy rain for the last fortnight, and we understand the consequences that has for communities,” Mr Lapsley said.

“Our thoughts are with emergency managers and communities over in South Australia, and we are happy to provide assistance.

“Thanks to volunteers and staff for their willingness to get on a plane or hit the road on grand final weekend to lend a hand. South Australia is grateful for the help."

Mr Lapsley said Victoria was able to send assistance and will still maintain the level of support needed for our state if Victoria experiences more rainfall or flooding into early next week.

All told, 120 personnel and 30 vehicles have been deployed today, including:

  • VICSES: 60 volunteers, 15 vehicles and one staff member. Half of the volunteers will travel by air and road
  • CFA: 4 4WD tanker strike teams (equaling 20 CFA trucks and 80 people) and five support vehicles

Planning will continue to ensure the provision of further support if required next week.
