Plan ahead for school holidays

“Most importantly, we remind everyone to never drive through floodwater,” said State Response Controller Darren McKenzie.

“Despite constant advice and warnings, we’re alarmed that people continue to drive through floodwater. People are risking their lives and the lives of our crews and it’s just not worth it. We’ve already conducted two rescues today and we don’t want to see anymore.”

Heavy rain that fell over Victoria from last Friday has led to riverine and flash flooding. That has led to evacuations, damage and hundreds of road closures.

While the rain has subsided for the time being, more is expected next week, and there is still a lot of water moving through rivers and creeks.

With school holidays starting tomorrow, it’s important for travellers to plan their journey and take care when visiting impacted areas.

“Victoria’s communities are open and operating, so Victorians can confidently continue with their holiday plans. There are some simple steps they can take to ensure their holiday is safe one for them and their family,” said Mr McKenzie.

  • Know where you’ll get information on conditions – flood warnings and updates are available at emergency.vic.gov.au, emergency broadcasters and social media
  • VicRoads advises all road users to plan their journey and monitor traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au for up to date road conditions
  • If visiting national parks or walking tracks, check with Parks Victoria via parkweb.vic.gov.au ahead of time for closures
  • Accredited Visitor Information Centre staff can assist in helping to plan your journey, and check ahead with hosts if you have booked accomodation
  • Children are particularly vulnerable to health impacts of floodwater and mould, which flooding often brings.
