• The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Flood Watch for North East Victoria with the risk of minor to moderate riverine flooding over the coming days.
• There is also a severe weather warning in place for multiple weather districts in relation to damaging winds and heavy rainfall bring the risk of falling trees and flash flooding.
• The tropical moisture in this system is consistent with the declaration of a La Nina event meaning there is an increased risk of above average rainfall and potential flash flooding and riverine flooding in the coming weeks and months.
• The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) have been preparing for these risks in recent months and we now need the community to be prepared for them also.
• Given the Flash Flooding potential in the coming days, it is a timely reminder to never attempt to walk or drive through flood water. We know the number one cause of historical flood fatalities is from people trapped or swept way in their vehicles. It can take just 15cm of water to float a small car. That’s the height of an average pen. If you ever come across water over the road, turn around and seek an alternative route.
• It’s important to prepare now for what a flood might mean to you in your local area. The best way to do that is by jumping on the SES website here in Victoria (ses.vic.gov.au) and seeing if your community or township has a Local Flood Guide. There are now over 120 at-risk communities with a Local Flood Guide so take the time to check the one for your area and understand how flooding may impact you.
• Be aware that in areas recently affected by fire, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. The heavy rain expected will also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
• If you do need to be on the roads, tomorrow (Thursday) please drive to the conditions and be aware you may need to find an alternate route in some low lying areas.
• Tragically there were three Victorian fatalities as a result of falling trees on August 27 as well as a number of other near misses in recent strong winds. We remind people to be vigilant to the risk of falling trees. The safest place to be during a storm is indoors.
• You should prepare your homes ahead of the strong winds by tying down loose objects in the front and back yard such as trampolines and outdoor furniture. These winds should ease by early on Friday morning.
