Recognition for everyday SES heroes like Peter Duncan

Recognition for everyday SES heroes like Peter Duncan

Did you know SES volunteer efforts save the Victorian Government (and everyday taxpayers) an estimated value that counts into the tens of millions of dollars? And that’s a conservative estimate. The true value is even higher. People’s lives and livelihoods depend on emergency services provided by the Victoria State Emergency Service’s (VICSES) over 5000-strong volunteers.

It can be a tough, sometimes thankless, wet and dirty task, responding at all hours of the day and night to help people in need – especially in stormy, wet and windy weather. It requires the added support of families and employers to free up volunteer time so they can do the work they do so well.

Being nominated for, and receiving an honour, is one way communities get to say thanks.

Peter Duncan honoured by the Higgins electorate

On 28 July 2017, Peter Duncan (Malvern Unit Deputy Controller) was awarded a Higgins Award for recognition of his dedication and service to enrich thir community. Presenting the awards was Kelly O’Dwyer, Federal Member for Higgins and Minister for Revenue and Financial Services.

Peter’s unit describe him as thoughtful and kind. He’s a busy IT Manager by day who has volunteered with VICSES for the past seven years. It’s a commitment he has made whole-heartedly, starting simply in his own words to “help out in times of need”. He demonstrated dedication and willingness to train and apply himself to learning the skills and know-how needed to respond before, during and after an emergency. That continues to involve regular training – and of course, responding to an incident when an emergency strikes.

Peter applied himself to training and operations, quickly rising to a position of leadership. He has acted as Unit Controller when requited, successfully led a specialist team in two National Disaster Rescue Competitions and leads a group involved in the continuous improvement of operational practices.

Perhaps it won’t surprise you that the SES isn’t his only volunteer gig. Since 2001, Peter has been an integral member of Power Assist, who run weekly basketball competition for people with an intellectual disability. Like many of our volunteers, Peter is motivated by giving back. It’s why so many people join VICSES.

Community and government awards

Members can be nominated for an honour or award by the community too. There are a range of national, state and local awards by organisations such as Volunteering Australia or the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

  • Check your council’s website for local honours opportunities
  • Visit It’s an Honour website.

Whilst people don’t seek it, recognition is a great way to say thanks for the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.
