Precautions after a storm

After a storm there is increased risk of fallen trees and power lines may be down. Other hazardous materials may be dislodged following damage to buildings.

Take care and be alert to hazards. Consider these safety tips:

  • Check in with your neighbours to make sure they are OK.
  • Be careful around debris when cleaning up, especially around building rubble that may contain asbestos.
  • Asbestos contaminated material should be disposed of correctly. Contact Mildura City Council for further information on disposal of asbestos.
  • Do not attempt to undertake repairs to your home's electrical system, call an electrician.
  • Do not enter a building that may not be safe.
  • Take care around solar panels, especially around any exposed wiring.
  • Be careful working on ladders or roofs, especially in windy conditions.
  • Drive to the conditions on the road and be aware of fallen trees and water that may still be over some roads.
  • Never drive, walk, ride or play in flood water. (This is the main cause of death during floods.)
  • Obey emergency road signs – do not drive around ‘road closed’ signs.

For help call Victoria SES on 132 500. If the emergency is life threatening call triple zero 000.
