Macedon Ranges students take charge of an emergency

Last Friday, high school students from across the Macedon Ranges discovered exactly what happens at the State Control Centre when an emergency is declared. The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) helped teens re-enact an emergency management response to a crisis under the guidance of Emergency Management Commissioner, Craig Lapsley.

The junior team learned about the different roles needed in an emergency response, identified all the risks, gathered important information and undertook a mock press briefing.

“They worked through every aspect of what you need to do when you manage a major incident,” said Mr Lapsley. “They did a fantastic job of understanding the complexity of a real-world scenario and how important it is to get community messaging out.”

The unique learning experience is the result of VICSES partnering with the Macedon Ranges Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee to foster young people’s engagement with local issues and emergency planning in the area.
