SES games gold haul

SES games gold haul

Published: 04/04/2017

Every year emergency services personnel tough it out on the sports field during the Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games. Last week the Victoria SES showed up in force to compete against teams from Victoria Police, Corrections Victoria, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, Surf Lifesaving Victoria, Parks Victoria, Ambulance Victoria, Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

Our volunteers and staff not only enjoyed the laughs and camaraderie, but took home their fair share of gold. It’s just another way we #workasone.

2017 games highlights

Beach Volleyball

After five years of valiant competition the Victoria SES have finally earnt their medal stripes in beach volley ball.

“Our team Storm Chasers was made up of Glen Eira Unit members Jon Cook, Johann Bartolo and myself, and Doug Wood from the Moorabbin SES Unit,” said Glen Eira Deputy Controller, Danielle Eyssens. “We toughed out five games over one day to win the gold medal match against Victoria Police.”

The close and hard fought game score was 31 to 29 with the Storm Chasers taking home the gold medal. Needless to say they were very happy (and so was Paddy).

Track and field

Hot competition on the track and field saw the SES continue their medal haul. Danielle added, “Johann went on to compete in the track and field following the gold medal beach volley ball game. He won three gold and silver in the long jump, triple jump and 100m and 200m races respectively.”

Victoria SES was represented in every event including the half marathon. As you can see, they were fairly proud of their bling and even let Steve Moneghetti get in the picture!

Swimming

There’s no prouder family than Jackie Ashman, her father Keith Hunter and daughter Louise Reitman from Yackandandah Unit who won a total of 17 gold medals. Jackie won gold in every single one of her races and was the fastest female in the 1500 metre swim and 2km open water. At 72, Keith won a record time in the 100m freestyle, and 22 year old Louise won gold in the 100m freestyle, grabbing gold and the games record.

More medal winners

More results will be released soon. Congratulations to all competitors! Let’s get ready for next year.
