State Budget delivers increased funding for VICSES

VICSES will receive $34.3 million for new trucks, boats and trailers and to modernise their buildings, including $2.8 million each for the Chelsea and Broadmeadows depots.

Also included is the establishment of new units in Caroline Springs/Plumpton, Clyde, Craigieburn North, Cranbourne, Officer and Point Cook.

The State Budget will allocate $14.9 million to VICSES services. Previously, councils and the Victorian Government have funded VICSES services jointly, but the $14.9 million takes pressure off councils and will cover operational costs. This money will cover the operational costs of SES units and also assist with long term leases for those located on council land – providing units with more certainty for the future.

VICSES management has been working closely with Emergency Management Victoria, the Municipal Association of Victoria, Local Government Victoria and the State Government to review and revise funding arrangements of VICSES units.

The State Emergency Service is on track to record its second busiest year on record, with volunteers responding to over 38,000 requests for assistance since this time last year.

Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said, "From new buildings to new trucks, this funding will help the men and women who help us – often in the worst of times.”
