Victorians urged to prepare for heavy rain

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding affecting Mildura, Horsham, Stawell, Swan Hill, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Portland, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Seymour and Wodonga.

VICSES Chief Officer Operations Trevor White said it was important people took care of themselves and others and listen to emergency warnings and advice.

“There are some ways to prepare yourself, your home, your family and your business for flood events.

“It’s important that people on the roads drive to conditions and be aware of road hazards such as mud, debris, damaged roads and bridges. Never drive through floodwater; it only takes about 15 centimetres of water to lose control of your vehicle.

“We also urge people not to play, swim, walk or ride through floodwater – it’s toxic and dangerous.

“If your property is at risk of flooding, raise belongings onto tables, benches or beds and if you’re on a farm move your livestock to higher ground.

“Tune into emergency broadcasters so you’re up-to-date with the latest conditions and if possible, make sure your neighbours are aware of the situation,” he said.

If you require assistance during a flood or storm call SES on 132 500. If you know your neighbours are vulnerable, check on them if it is safe to do so. If your emergency is life threatening call Triple Zero (000).
