The SES for Schools program helps children understand the risks of floods, storms and other natural hazards and builds children’s resilience by teaching them how to stay safe before and during an emergency.
Overview
The SES for Schools program is part of Disaster Risk Reduction Education (DRRE). It helps children build the knowledge and skills to stay safe during emergencies.
Developed by the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) for educators, students, and families, the program provides engaging, curriculum-aligned resources for Preschool, Foundation, and Levels 1–6.
Through interactive lessons and activities, students will:
-
Build awareness of local hazards, including floods, storms, and other natural disasters
-
Learn how to prepare for emergencies
-
Identify key actions to stay safe
Designed specifically for teachers, SES for Schools offers easy-to-use, ready-made resources that support meaningful learning while reducing preparation time.

Teachers are supported with an introductory briefing and a comprehensive suite of cross-curricular, curriculum-aligned teaching and learning activities. SES members and community partners enhance the program by contributing their expertise and local knowledge.
The SES in Schools Emergency Readiness Program is delivered across three core topics: Emergency Ready, Flood Ready, and Be Storm Smart.
It incorporates student-centred learning approaches, including activation of prior knowledge, modelling, demonstration, explanation, guided practice, independent practice, and review, to support effective learning outcomes.
Book a SES visit
VICSES volunteers offer free visits to Victorian preschool and primary schools. These sessions help students understand how to stay safe during emergencies. The program modules run for approximately 30–60 minutes.
Before booking, please read the School Booking Information and the booking checklist. You can also visit the SES for Schools Educators page for additional school resources.
While we aim to accommodate all requests, a volunteer presenter may not always be available on your requested date or time. We recommend submitting your booking at least four weeks in advance.
