An interagency response to mass casualty events was the focus of a Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) training exercise at Bangholme yesterday.

The day saw Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics come together with partner agencies to exercise a simulated mass casualty scenario in a high fidelity environment, while also showcasing the VICSES air shelter.

Members from VICSES, Victoria Police, and AV participated in two practice scenarios featuring fake smoke and sound effects to make the experience as realistic as possible.

The scenarios imitated a minor train derailment between stations with injured passengers, and a rave in an underground venue where a ‘crowd crush’ had occurred.

AV paramedics practiced assessing and managing patients in a realistic mass casualty scenario, building their capability to better respond to scenarios they may face on the road.

Eastern Metropolitan Region Acting Emergency Management Planning Co-ordinator Shaun Caulfield said the day provided valuable information to all involved.

“High fidelity training is extremely valuable to our staff to ensure we are well equipped for any situation we might face in the community,” he said.

“A great day was had by all, with a good inter-agency spirit brought by everyone.

“Thanks to Exercise Coordinator, Justin Navas, for organising the day and showcasing VICSES' equipment and capability.

"Our VICSES volunteers enhance the ability of our paramedics to provide care, at these types of incidents.”

The air shelter is an inflatable structure, which can provide protection from the elements, for up to 10 stretcher patients or 20 seated patients. It is deployed with 10 folding chairs, and can be set up within 10 minutes from arrival.

There are three shelters situated in strategic locations across the metropolitan region which can be deployed upon request.
